The Ulster BOCES Sewing in Kingston Design Challenge

The Ulster BOCES Sewing in Kingston Design Challenge features student work developed in response to the artifacts on display in the gallery. They present the next generation's visions for sewing in Kingston!

In October 2022, high school students from the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program at Ulster BOCES toured Sewing in Kingston and explored artifacts and images that told nearly a century of history in Kingston’s garment industry. Students analyzed images from Kingston’s shirt factories, heard oral histories from the Kingston Knitting Mills, and inspected garments that featured Oaxacan and Ukrainian embroidery.

As they explored the gallery, we challenged students to pick an object from the exhibition that could inspire an original design of their own. Students sketched or photographed the object that caught their eye and then brainstormed questions they might ask the designer who created it. Once back in their classroom, students got to work creating their own designs.

Take a look at their creations below! Thank you to the Ulster BOCES students and their instructor, Nicole Foti, for sharing this incredible work with us.

The Reher Center and Ulster BOCES’ Fashion Design and Merchandising Program collaborated for the first time in 2020 on our outdoor Stitched Together exhibition. Check out our exhibition page and scroll down to see images from this show!
